Gatehouse Heritage Consultancy was founded to fill a need in the market to support Listed homeowners in caring for their Heritage assets. In my role as Managing Director of a specialist building contracting company I met countless homeowners who had taken advise from “Restoration Builders” which if they had actioned would have landed them in alot of trouble with theconservation officer and could result in reversing the work, fines or even legal action.
A little knowledge can be very dangerous and a 1 size fits all approach does not work on period properties. For example; the original construction of a Georgian farmhouse will be very different to that of a 19th-century cottage and the devil is in the details.
The wrong material can cause damp leading to wrote and potential structural issues. We always say “You can replace the material but not the History” so it is best to approach each project on its merit and with the understanding and respect it deserves.
